Jenni said goodbye to white—an out of place cabinet is now a cheerful pink!

Jenni Virta’s rustic-romantic phase ended long ago. An impressive display cabinet in her 1920s wooden home got a fresh, vibrant look that better suits its current style.

Jenni, who works as a photographer, already had an arch cut from a sheet of material at her studio for a work project. It was perfect for trying out the idea on the cabinet and for fine-tuning the arch’s shape and dimensions to fit.

Where did the idea for customizing the cabinet come from?

The rustic display cabinet no longer suited our home after a drastic change in style. However, the cabinet was in good, sturdy condition. Moving it would have been a hassle, so it made sense to reuse it. I looked for ideas on Pinterest and thought about what could be done. I wanted a more modern style that would suit our now colorful home.

“The inner parts of the arches that were left over now decorate our son’s wall.”

How did the transformation happen?

The biggest task was definitely emptying the cabinet. A lot of things had piled up, but at the same time I was able to recycle what I no longer needed. My dad and my partner Jere handled the carpentry, so I drew up some plans for them. A sketch made it easier to visualize the idea. The glass doors were removed, and my dad sawed the arches out of plywood. That part went smoothly, but painting turned out to be more demanding. The easily movable parts, like the doors and shelves, were taken for spray painting. Since we didn’t dismantle the frame, it was painted in place with a roller. First, a primer tinted with the final color was applied over the glossy white cabinet. After that, the cabinet got two more coats of tinted furniture paint. The leftover arch pieces ended up on our son’s wall as decorations.

How did you choose the cabinet color?

It’s my favorite shade. It ties together the spaces on our main floor, since both the entryway and the kitchen backsplash use the same hue. We don’t have that color anywhere else.

What kind of DIY projects do you have planned next?

Inspired by this project, we’re updating our daughter’s headboard using the same idea. The headboard will be attached to the bed.
