Love is in the air
Renowned Finnish actor Iina Kuustonen’s plush beanie—knit it in just two evenings
Designed by actor Iina Kuustonen, the Love beanie suits any occasion. This fuzzy, reliably warm beanie is knit with two strands of yarn on thick needles. It’s also a great pattern for beginners.
Size: One size fits most adults.
Love beanie: materials
- 60 g of Viking Garn Alpaca Maya (80% superfine alpaca, 13% merino wool, 5% nylon, 50 g = 160 m) in light gray (713), and 60 g of Viking Garn Alpaca Bris (60% baby alpaca, 11% merino wool, 29% nylon, 50 g = 150 m) in light gray (313).
- 40–50 cm circular needles and double pointed needles in size 7 mm (US 10.5) or the size needed to obtain gauge. You can also knit the beanie entirely on double pointed needles.
- A stitch marker.
Stitch patterns:
- Rib stitch: Work in the round: *k1, p1*, repeat from * to *.
- Stockinette stitch: Work in the round and knit all stitches every round.
Gauge: 13 sts and 22 rnds = 10 cm in stockinette stitch.

Love beanie: instructions
- Cast on 64 sts with 1 strand of Alpaca Maya and 1 strand of Alpaca Bris held together, and join to work in the round. Place a marker at the start of the round and move it up as you go.
- First, work 2 rounds of rib in the round. Then knit 60 rounds in stockinette, or about 27 cm.
- Turn the wrong side of the work out and change the knitting direction as follows: Slip the first stitch purlwise (= insert the needle into the stitch as if to purl), then pull and tighten the yarn at the back so that the legs of the previous round’s stitch are lifted onto the needle. It will look like there are two sts on the needle.
- Continue in stockinette. On the next round, knit the double stitch you made at the beginning of the round as a single stitch. Then work 20 more rounds in stockinette, about 9–10 cm.
- Then divide the sts onto four needles and start the crown decreases: knit 2 sts together in the middle and end of each needle = 56 sts. Knit 2 rounds without decreases. Repeat the decreases every 3rd round until 16 sts remain. Break the yarn and pull it twice through the remaining sts.
Finishing
Weave in the ends. Lightly steam the beanie by hovering the iron above it. Let it dry. Fold up about 12+13 cm at the brim.
