The long-legged Hullabaloo socks burst with color and are easy to knit

The Hullabaloo socks were created by Finnish knitting designer Tiina Huhtinen-Siistonen to have fun with colors. These long-legged socks are a fantastic leftover-yarn project: You can knit the patterns in your favorite hues, or stick to different shades of one color.

Size: EU 39.

Colorful Hullabaloo socks: supplies

  • Any Aran-weight yarn (100 g = approx. 200 m)
  • The sample socks were knitted with Novita 7 Brothers yarn in these colors: 120 g of main color (yellow), 31 g of contrast color 1 (green), 17 g of contrast color 2 (pink), 16 g of contrast color 3 (purple), and 16 g of contrast color 4 (orange)
  • 3.5 mm (US 4) double-pointed needles or a circular needle.

How to knit the Hullabaloo socks

All the sock patterns are divisible by four, so you can easily adjust the size of the socks. If you add or remove stitches from the leg, adjust the ankle decreases accordingly. You can change the foot length by either reducing or adding rounds after the chart or by adding single stripes.

1. Cast on 60 sts, 15 sts per needle. *K1 through the back loop, p2*, repeat *–* for 20 rounds. Then knit 1 round and begin the stitch pattern.

2. Knit with contrast color 1: knit 1 round, purl 1 round.

  • Round 1: Work with main color: *k3, slip 1*. Repeat *–* to the end of the round.
  • Round 2: Work with main color: *p3, slip 1*. Repeat to the end of the round.
  • Round 3: Work with contrast color 1: k1, *slip 1, k3*. Repeat to the end of the round.
  • Round 4: Work with contrast color 1: p1, *slip 1, p3*. Repeat to the end of the round.

3. Repeat rounds 1–4 a total of 7 times, then work rounds 1 and 2 one more time.

4. K3 with the main color, and k1 with contrast color 1 (green). Repeat for 3 rounds.

5. Now work the bobbles with contrast color 1: k3, then knit the 4th st four times (alternate knitting it from the front and the back). Turn work, p4, turn work, k4, turn work, p4, turn work, k2, pass the right-side st over the left, knit the next st and pass the st over again, repeat once more. Only 1 st remains, k3, then make the next bobble, and repeat to the end of the round.

The bobbles will settle into place over the following rounds.

6. Begin Chart 1. The gray areas at the end of the chart indicate decreases (k2tog), and the stitches that have been decreased are shown in white in the chart.

7. After finishing Chart 1, you have 48 sts, 12 sts on each needle. Work *k1 through the back loop, p2*, repeat for 10 rounds. Then knit the sts on needle 1 onto needle 4.

8. Heel flap, wrong side: k2, p6, k8, p6, k2. Right side: knit all sts. Repeat these rows until you have 24 rows in the heel flap.

9. Begin the heel flap decreases: k2, p6, k7, k2tog, turn work, k7, k2tog. Continue repeating k7, k2tog on both sides until there are 8 sts left. Using a strand of yarn, pick up 13 sts through their back loops at each edge of the heel flap. Distribute the 8 heel sts onto needles 1 and 4. Now you have 17-12-12-17 sts.

10. Begin Chart 2 and decrease at the end of needle 1 and the beginning of needle 4 by k2tog every other round until each needle has 12 sts. Finish the chart. Then knit 10 rounds in the main color.

11. Wide wedge decrease: Make the decreases every other round until 5 sts remain on each needle. Then make the decreases on every round until only 2 sts remain. Cut the yarn and pull it through the stitches.

Decreases:

  • Needle 1: Knit until there are 3 sts left on the needle, k2tog, k1.
  • Needle 2: k1, then slip 2 sts as if to knit, slip them back to the left needle and k them tog through the back loops.
  • Needle 3: Knit until 3 sts remain, k2tog, k1.
  • Needle 4: k1, then slip 2 sts as if to knit, slip them back to the left needle and k them tog through the back loops.
