How to make a flower crown: materials

  • “Solomio” spray carnations (or regular spray carnations)
  • spray roses
  • wax flowers
  • western millet (or another ornamental grass)
  • broom (or bilberry twigs)
  • Vanda orchid blooms
  • dried bunny tails
  • dried pink grass
  • white dried fern
  • white dried ruscus
  • floral tape
  • wire, two or three pieces about 40 cm each
  • myrtle wire (or thin florist wire)
  • ribbon for tying
Your crown will look lively when you use plants of various colors and shapes. Grasses add a breezy finish.
If you lightly mist your crown, you can store it overnight in a plastic bag in the refrigerator until the big moment.

Flower crown: instructions

Floral tape makes the wire slightly tacky, making it easier to attach flowers.

1. Create a wire base for your crown. Wrap two wires with floral tape, stretching it slightly before winding. Fit the base to your head, then bend small hooks at both ends. These simple steps to craft a floral headpiece give you a perfect foundation.

Wrap the wire around the flowers a few times and gently tighten it.

2. Cut the flower stems to about five centimeters. Take a small bundle of flowers and grasses in your hand and attach them to the base with thin wire. Wrap the wire around the stems a few times and gently pull it taut. Let the grasses extend freely, and allow the crown to remain slightly asymmetrical.

3. Once your wreath reaches the right size, try it on to be sure. Then trim the remaining stems and secure the wire.

A wire base ensures the crown stays sturdy.

4. Tie ribbons to both hooks. If you prefer no ribbon, simply link the hooks together. For more styling tips for a handmade flower crown, experiment with colors and textures.

Tightly bundled mini bouquets with short stems create the fullest crown.
