Houseplants for almost free: grow them from peanuts, pink peppercorns, and ginger

Try growing whimsical foliage plants from store-bought fruit seeds and spices to brighten a windowsill. Riitta tested peanuts and Anu pink peppercorns. A piece of ginger deserves a chance, too!

A lush peanut plant

Finnish Riitta Takkula decided to toss a few from a regular bag of peanuts into a pot and see what would grow. The result is a pretty houseplant, one that would even produce a crop—if you could bring yourself to harvest it.

A lush green screen from pink peppercorns

Food writer Anu Brask took a few pink peppercorns from a bag sitting in her spice cupboard, put them into soil and set the pot on the windowsill. Over time, a striking living screen sprouted in the pot.
