Crochet a colorful hood from granny squares—this adorable warmer is easy to make, one piece at a time
This hood crocheted from granny squares will keep your head and neck wonderfully warm. By adjusting the size of the squares and your crochet gauge, you can make the hood fit any outdoor enthusiast, big or small.
Granny-square hood—materials:
- Aran-weight yarn in various colors (for example, Novita 7 Brothers)
- crochet hook size 3.5–4 mm (US E-4–G-6)
- scissors
- a needle for weaving in ends (you can also weave in ends with a crochet hook).
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch.

Granny-square hood—pattern:

1. Start by chaining 6, then join into a ring with a sl st in the first ch.
2. For Round 1, start by ch 3 (this counts as the first dc). Each round begins with ch 3. Then work 2 dc, 3 ch, 3 dc, and repeat that sequence 2 more times. Finish with ch 3, then end the round with a sl st in the 3rd ch at the beginning of the round. You now have 4 dc groups (and corners).

3. Round 2: Change color. Crochet 3 dc + ch 3 + 3 dc, then ch 1 and repeat those dc groups 3 more times. End the round with a sl st as in Round 1. You'll now have 8 dc clusters in total.
4. Once again, change color at the start of Round 3. Work 3 dc, ch 1, 4 dc, ch 1 (you are now at a corner), then 3 dc, ch 1. Keep repeating around. End with a sl st as in previous rounds. Continue for one more round in the same way, then fasten off and weave in the yarn ends with a hook or needle.

5. Crochet 12 granny squares. You can vary the color combinations as you like, or make them all identical.

6. Join the squares with chain stitches, as shown in the photo.

7. Fold the squares at the hood’s crown and at the front in half, as shown.
8. After joining all the squares, weave in the ends and finish by gently steaming through a cloth.
