Although this pattern is written for Aran-weight yarn, you can also use thinner yarns held double. The size of the final product depends on your yarn choice and gauge. For added texture, try mixing in thin, fuzzy yarns.

Granny-square hood—pattern:

Starting a granny square

1. Start by chaining 6, then join into a ring with a sl st in the first ch.

2. For Round 1, start by ch 3 (this counts as the first dc). Each round begins with ch 3. Then work 2 dc, 3 ch, 3 dc, and repeat that sequence 2 more times. Finish with ch 3, then end the round with a sl st in the 3rd ch at the beginning of the round. You now have 4 dc groups (and corners).

3. Round 2: Change color. Crochet 3 dc + ch 3 + 3 dc, then ch 1 and repeat those dc groups 3 more times. End the round with a sl st as in Round 1. You'll now have 8 dc clusters in total.

4. Once again, change color at the start of Round 3. Work 3 dc, ch 1, 4 dc, ch 1 (you are now at a corner), then 3 dc, ch 1. Keep repeating around. End with a sl st as in previous rounds. Continue for one more round in the same way, then fasten off and weave in the yarn ends with a hook or needle.

Different kinds of granny squares

5. Crochet 12 granny squares. You can vary the color combinations as you like, or make them all identical.

Joining granny squares with chain stitches

6. Join the squares with chain stitches, as shown in the photo.
