1. A hidden loft apartment in an old leather factory

The Napiala leather factory dates back to 1880
The old ladder leading to the sleeping nook is from the factory’s original days.

Otto and Janita purchased an old leather factory while on their round-the-world trip. The rugged setting pays homage to the past and shelters the couple’s dream loft behind thick brick walls. Even in their renovation, they aimed to preserve the building’s historical character.

“We only make changes that let us restore its history. If you want something new, you need to buy a new house,” Otto says.

2. A home in a rag factory decorated with playful details

A passionate desire to rearrange their lives led Marianne and Vesa Karhumaa on a search for a new home. The family moved from the countryside to the city after discovering an old factory building where wool insulation was once packed, and where famed meatballs were sold and eaten.

When an avid tinkerer and an impulsive decorator discover an old factory building, the result is a delightful home full of personal touches, such as a staircase railing made from a bicycle and a sink cabinet repurposed from a sewing machine.

“We don’t plan with a hardware store catalog in hand,” Marianne explains.

3. From an abandoned house factory to a luxurious small apartment building

A rough brick wall and exposed ceiling beams reflect the building’s history, and the concrete floor completes the atmosphere.

You’d never guess that this handsome small apartment building by the sea was once a run-down factory. Anu and Tony Pelander designed the interior of their spacious loft home to respect the spirit of the old house factory.

4. A colorful dream home in the old State Margarine Factory

The margarine factory was built in 1924 and expanded in the 1930s.
“I’ve always thought it would be nice to live somewhere special. I love how it looks here. We have our own chimney, a yard, and a terrace. It’s surprisingly peaceful and unlike anywhere else in the area. The location is amazing. When we sit in the yard, all we usually hear is birdsong,” Peppi says.

The former State Margarine Factory in Helsinki sat abandoned for around thirty years, until 31 homes were built there. One of them belongs to Peppi and Antti and their family. Past and present come together seamlessly in this colorful home for a family of three.

5. An enchanting cottage from an old hat factory

In 2019, Henna and Toni went to check out a building that had been on the market for quite some time. In an earlier life, it had served, among other things, as the Salo hat factory.
The house had been on the market for several years, and around a hundred people had viewed it before Henna and Joni. The place had no doors or fireplaces. There was no running water on the property, and it lacked a sewer system. The amount of work to make the house usable looked immense.

Henna and Joni Karhumaa had firmly decided they wouldn’t become cottage owners. Then they found a forgotten log building amid tall grass: the old hat factory, which was worth the effort to restore.
