This knitted beanie makes a heart-warming gift for your special someone
The Hertta beanie is the cutest accessory for winter! Thanks to the simple two-color colorwork design, it’s perfect even for beginners. The heart-themed beanie also makes a lovely gift for your loved ones. The pattern includes two sizes: one for children and one for adults.
Size: child(adult). Head circumference when slightly stretched: 53(56) cm.
Hertta beanie: materials
- 100 g of West Yorkshire Spinners The Croft Aran (100% wool, 100 g = 166 m) in color Ollaberry 568, and 100 g of Cascade Yarns Cascade 220 (100% wool, 100 g = 200 m) in color 9605 Tiger Lily
- 5 mm (US 8) circular needles (40 cm) and 5 mm (US 8) double-pointed needles, or size to match gauge
- a stitch marker.
Gauge: 20 sts and 23 rounds = 10 cm.
Yarn consumption
For the child’s size, you’ll need about 52 g of yarn in total (about 40 g of the purple Ollaberry shade and 12 g of the orange Tiger Lily shade), and for the adult size, about 60 g (around 44 g of Ollaberry and 16 g of Tiger Lily). This amount does not include the pom-pom. One skein of Ollaberry and one skein of Tiger Lily should be enough to knit both a child’s and an adult’s hat.
Abbreviations:
- st, sts = stitch, stitches
- k = knit, knit stitch
- p = purl, purl stitch

Hertta beanie: instructions
1. Cast on 84(98) sts with the main color. Join the work in a round and mark the start of the round with a stitch marker.
2. Work k1 p1 ribbing for about 4(5) cm. Then knit one round.
3. Begin the colorwork according to chart A. The 14-stitch pattern in the charts is worked 6(7) times per round.
4. Knit 2 rounds with the main color after chart A. Then start working chart B.
5. After chart B, knit 2 rounds with the main color. Finally, work chart C. When you have completed the motif, knit 2 more rounds in the main color.

6. Start the top-of-the-head decreases:
These decreases are worked on every round. Each decrease round reduces the stitch count by 7. Work the decreases as follows:
- 1st round: *Knit 10(12) sts, knit 2 together*. Repeat from * to * to the end of the round. 77(91) sts remain.
- 2nd round: *Knit 9(11) sts, knit 2 together*. Repeat from * to * to the end of the round. 70(84) sts remain.
On each subsequent round, work the decreases one stitch sooner: On the 3rd round, knit 8(10) sts before the decrease, on the 4th round, 7(9) sts, and so on.
Continue these decreases until 14 sts remain. Switch to double-pointed needles when using circular needles becomes too difficult.
7. Cut the yarn, thread it through the remaining stitches, and pull tight to close the opening. Weave in the ends.

Finishing
1. Wet the hat by soaking it in water for about 15 minutes. Gently squeeze out most of the water without twisting the hat. Press it between towels and let it dry flat.
2. Make a pom-pom from the orange yarn using a pom-pom maker or by cutting circles out of cardboard. The pom-pom on the sample hat shown in the photos is about 9 cm in diameter. If you use cardboard circles, you will need two circles with a diameter of about 10 cm. Attach the finished pom-pom to the hat with a few stitches.
