A whimsical twist for fall décor

Spruces from heather?! Satu created these clever heather-spruces from just one pot of calluna—here’s how you can do it too!

Is this the loveliest yard decoration for fall? “Heather-spruces are super quick and easy to make,” says Satu Räikkönen.

Where did you come up with the idea, and what materials are in the spruces?

I found the idea on Pinterest. I used store-bought callunas for the spruces, and one calluna was enough for three spruces. The spruces are about 20–30 cm (8–12″) tall. Other materials I used included wooden sticks, wire, floral foam, and moss. The base is an old brick-making box.

Could you describe how you made the heather-spruces?

They are super quick and easy to make. You build each spruce from the bottom up: take a small bundle of calluna stems (5–6 pieces) and wrap them around the stick using wire. The next bundle covers the previous stem ends and the wire. I poked the wooden stick into the foam in the box.

How long ago did you make the spruces, and have they stayed pretty as they dry?

The spruces are a couple of weeks old. Time will tell how they’ll hold up. I keep them on a sheltered terrace.

I noticed you have other beautiful arrangements on your Instagram account (@santtu59). Where do you get your ideas?

I can’t really say where the ideas always pop up. I make arrangements now and then, whenever an idea comes to me in the middle of my gardening tasks. I mostly gather materials from nature and my garden. When I run out of my own cut flowers, I also buy some from the store.

What are you making next?

I was thinking of making bigger spruces in a similar style next, using blueberry twigs and conifer branches.
