Granny squares with popcorn stitches—supplies for the pillow:

  • Yarn in various colors (scrap yarn works too, but be sure you have plenty of your main color).
  • A crochet hook that matches your yarn
  • A darning needle
  • A pillow that matches the size of your completed piece.

Here's how to crochet popcorn squares and turn them into a pillow

  1. Crochet 6 chain stitches (ch 6) and join them into a ring.
  2. Crochet 8 sets of (1 treble crochet + ch 2) into the ch 6 ring. Always chain 3 as the first treble crochet of the round. End the round with a slip stitch and change color.
  3. Make 5 treble crochets (tr) into the first chain 2 space of the previous round. Remove the hook from the loop and insert it into the first treble of the group. Pull the yarn through the loop, then reinsert the hook into the freed loop and make a single crochet. That’s your first petal. Chain 3. Make a total of 8 petals (or “popcorns”), with chain 3 between each. End with a slip stitch and change color.
  4. Into each chain 3 space, make 3 double crochets, chain 1, 3 double crochets, and chain 1. End the round with a slip stitch. Then change to your main color.
  5. Work 3 slip stitches to reach the first chain 1 space of the previous round, then chain 1. *Make 3 double crochets into the chain, then chain 1.* Repeat from * to *. You’re now at the first corner of the square. Into the corner chain 1 space, make 2 double crochets, 1 treble crochet, chain 1, then 1 treble crochet, 2 double crochets, chain 1. Continue the round with two sets of 3 double crochets + chain 1, then make the next corner. Work like this around. Your square is now complete. Make 16 squares in total, or as many as you need for your desired pillow size.
  6. Sew the squares together with your main color in rows of four, working through the outermost stitches. Then join the rows.
  7. Choose your border color and make a row of double crochets around the pillow. In the corners, work 2–3 double crochets into a few stitches.
  8. Weave in your ends and use discreet stitches to sew the crocheted piece onto your pillow.

Tip!

You can make both sides of the pillow from popcorn squares. By sewing the two sides together and adding a zipper on one side, you’ll have a pillowcase made entirely of squares.

You can make a pillow crocheted with granny squares look entirely different just by changing the main color. Will you choose black or white?
