Granny squares spruce up the tree! Turn the nostalgic squares into playful Christmas decorations

These granny-square Christmas ornaments have an air of the traditional yet are refreshingly new. They’re also a clever way to use up yarn scraps in various colors. If you like, tuck a bit of stuffing inside each square to make a tiny pillow. See? Even classic granny squares can feel festive!

Size: about 8 × 8 cm (approx. 3" × 3").

Granny square Christmas ornaments—supplies:

  • Novita Venla yarn (or similar) in the following shades: 372 (sage green), 505 (baby pink), 764 (purple), 285 (saffron) and 658 (burnt orange)
  • 2.5–3 mm crochet hook or the size needed to obtain gauge.
Pick a few colors that work well together. Christmas doesn’t need to be all red and white—muted colors and pastels suit the season just as well.
Feel free to crochet squares in different sizes. Add a plush tassel to one corner for extra flair.

Granny square ornaments—pattern:

Crochet the squares in your chosen color combinations, changing shades whenever you like. Squares with three or four rounds work well. You can choose from two different ways to finish the ornaments.

With Color 1, chain (ch) 6 and join with a slip stitch (sl st) to the first ch to form a ring. Work as follows.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first double crochet (dc)), 2 dc into ring, *ch 3, 3 dc*; repeat from * to * 2 more times, ch 3. Join Color 2 and close rnd with a sl st in the third ch of the beginning ch-3. You now have four 3-dc groups.

Rnd 2: Ch 4, in next ch-3 corner space work *3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1*; repeat from * to * 2 more times, in last corner space work 3 dc, ch 3, 2 dc. Close rnd with a sl st as in Rnd 1.

Rnd 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in next ch-space, ch 1, in next ch-3 corner space work *3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-space, ch 1*; repeat from * to * 2 more times. In final corner space, work 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1. Join Color 3 and close rnd with a sl st.

Rnd 4: Ch 4, 3 dc in next ch-space, ch 1, in next ch-3 corner space work *3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1*; repeat from * to * 2 more times, in last corner space work 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1, 2 dc in final ch-space. Join Color 4 and close rnd with a sl st to the third ch of beginning ch-4.

Crochet two identical pieces for each ornament.

The cute picot edge is easy to make by simply alternating chains and single crochets. The hanging loop is worked in chains.

Finishing

Finishing option 1: Weave in the ends. Place two matching squares wrong sides together. Join yarn in the center ch of any corner. Working through the back loops only, sc the pieces together, stitch by stitch. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Picot round: *ch 3, 2 sc along the edge of the square*; repeat from * to * around. At the end of the rnd, ch 30 for a hanging loop and fasten off. Attach the loop end to its base.

Finishing option 2: Join the squares and make the hanging loop as above, but skip the picot round. Instead, make a long tassel and attach it to the bottom corner of the ornament.
