Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), work 2 dc into the ring, *ch 3, then 3 dc, repeat from * two more times, then ch 3. Close the round with a sl st in the 3rd ch from the start and change color. You will have 4 dc groups in this round.
Round 2: Ch 4, in the 3-ch corner *make 3 dc + ch 3 + 3 dc, ch 1, repeat from * two more times, then in the last 3-ch corner make 3 dc + ch 3 + 2 dc. Close the round with a sl st as in Round 1 and change color if desired.
Rounds 3–5: Ch 3, 2 dc in the middle space of the side, ch 1, in the 3-ch corner space *3 dc + ch 3 + 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in the side space, ch 1, repeat from * two more times. In the corner, make 3 dc + ch 3 + 3 dc, ch 1, and close the round with a sl st, changing color. Continue by following the pattern for Rounds 4–5.
Round 6: Choose a new color and sl st into a chain space. Continue by working a sc in each chain stitch. In the corners, crochet 2 sc in one chain stitch.
Round 7: With gray yarn, ch 2 (counts as the first hdc). Continue by making 1 hdc in each chain stitch around the entire edge. In the corners, crochet 2 hdc in one chain stitch.
Note! At each color change, crochet the yarn ends into the dc stitches so you won’t have to weave in every end later.

Finishing
Sew the squares together. Create a border by working a sl st into any chain stitch, then ch 2 (counts as the first hdc). Continue with hdc all around. Remember to add 2 hdc in one chain stitch at each corner.
Make the next round in sc with another color. The final round is again crocheted with gray yarn in hdc.
Fasten off. Gently steam the blanket or lay it to its measurements on a table, lightly spray with water, and let it dry.

Tips!
- Crochet granny squares in wild color combinations. It’s more fun when you pick shades based on your mood along the way.
- Every other square can use five different shades, switching colors on each round, while the others can have only a few tones. This makes it easier to arrange the blanket’s color pattern when you join the squares.
- You can also crochet the blanket with a regular pattern using just three shades.
