The golden pothos is easy to care for—check out our care guide to help your plant thrive!

Caring for golden pothos is simple when you provide the right conditions: bright indirect light, humidity, and space to climb or trail.

Golden pothos (Epipremnum aureum) is native to the tropical islands of the Pacific Ocean. In those regions, it grows several meters long and climbs tree trunks and branches. In homes, it can be grown hanging freely in a basket or with its shoots supported upwards. You can also plant golden pothos in the same pot with other plants.

There is also a completely green-leaved variety of golden pothos. It tolerates shade better than the variegated ‘Aureum’ and ‘Marble Queen’ varieties.

Growing golden pothos

Growing medium

The golden pothos thrives in well-drained, sandy soil. Peat, for example, is a poor growing medium for golden pothos, as it keeps the roots constantly wet. It’s advisable to provide good drainage in the pot, as the roots of the golden pothos are sensitive to constant wetness.

Location

The golden pothos thrives in a place with plenty of light but no direct sunlight. As a rule of thumb, the more light-colored and golden yellow streaks the leaves have, the more light the variety needs. In too shady a spot, the variegation of the leaves diminishes.

Temperature

Normal room temperature. In winter, when there is less light, the temperature can be cooler, but never below 15°C.

Golden pothos care

Watering the golden pothos

Consistent moisture is important when caring for your golden pothos. Let the surface soil dry slightly before the next watering.

Fertilizing the golden pothos

From spring to autumn, you can add fertilizer solution to the water when watering, or insert fertilizer cones or sticks into the pot as directed.

Repotting the golden pothos

The golden pothos thrives in a fairly small pot and can remain in the same pot for a long time. Therefore, you don’t need to change its soil every year—simply add new topsoil to the surface of the pot.

Repot the golden pothos only when the roots have completely filled the old pot. Choose a new pot that is only slightly larger than the previous one.

Propagating the golden pothos

You can propagate golden pothos from cuttings.
