Old made new
Give your table a checkered makeover
An old table becomes fresh and lovely when you paint a checkered pattern or other designs on its surface.
An old table takes on a modern look when you paint diamond shapes on its surface.
Painting a diamond pattern: materials needed
- An old table
- A scraper or a sander
- Painter’s tape
- Furniture paint
- Varnish
Painting a diamond pattern: instructions
- Remove the old varnish from the table surface with a sharp scraper or by sanding. If you use a power sander, be careful not to wear down the thin veneer.
- Carefully sketch your desired design on the table using a pencil. For this table, we chose a diamond pattern.
- Mask the shapes precisely with painter’s tape, and press the tape edges firmly onto the table surface to ensure clean borders.
- Paint the shapes, then remove the painter’s tape before the paint has fully dried.
- Once the paint is completely dry, apply one or two coats of varnish. Before varnishing, check that the varnish will not dissolve the paint underneath.
