Hoop up holiday cheer
Turn your hula hoop into a giant wreath and give your exercise gear a holiday break
Did you also impulse buy a hula-hoop that now lies unused in the corner? Turn it into the holiday season’s most stunning giant wreath and put it to work!
Giant wreath—materials
- hula hoop
- pine branches
- thuja branches
- eucalyptus branches
- ivy vines
- tillandsia air plants
- a silver lace fern branch
- wire and side cutters
- decorative ribbon (Knittingroom.fi)
- mushroom decorations (Ikea)

How to make the giant wreath
- Place the hoop horizontally on a table. Cut the pine branches to about 50 centimeters (20”) and arrange them for the bottom layer of the wreath. Attach the branches to the hoop with wire, focusing on the top edge and leaving a slightly thinner area in the lower center.
- Attach thuja and eucalyptus branches here and there on top of, and in between, the pine branches. Group them in small clusters so the arrangement doesn’t become too uniform.
- Attach a few long ivy vines in different spots. If necessary, use wire to support their stems so they lift off the wreath’s surface.
- Lift the hoop onto the wall and continue working on the wreath in an upright position.
- Slide the silver lace fern branch onto the wreath slightly off-center, then add the tillandsias on the opposite side for balance.
- Finish the wreath with fabric ribbon and decorative mushrooms.

Tip!
If you like, you can add small plastic water tubes (available at flower shops) to the stems of ivy and silver lace fern to help them stay fresh longer. Spraying the wreath with a spray bottle also keeps it lush.
