Enchanting evergreens
Make a giant wreath to brighten your yard all winter—here’s how
Create a minimalist look with Norway spruce, or craft a striking centerpiece by tying on a variety of conifer branches. Adorn your creation with ribbons, natural elements, and Christmas ornaments to suit your taste.
What you’ll need for a giant wreath:
- A wreath base, about 60 cm (24″) in diameter
- Norway spruce, pine, cypress, and fir branches
- brunia and boxwood
- peppermint candies
- newspaper or hay
- wire for binding
- pruning shears

How to tie a giant wreath:
- Begin by adding volume to the bottom of the wreath by weaving crumpled newspaper or hay around the base. It’s easier to keep it symmetrical if you step back occasionally to check your progress.
- Cut the conifer branches, boxwood, and brunia into suitable lengths.
- Begin by tying Norway spruce at the top of the wreath. Place a suitable number of branches side by side on the base and secure them with binding wire. In wider sections, you may need multiple layers to cover the wreath’s entire thickness. You can also bundle a few branches first, then tie them to the base. For the bottom, mix in other conifers, boxwood, and brunia.
- Continue using only Norway spruce. Use shorter branches at the starting point to keep the look neat.
- Finally, attach the candies to the wreath with wire.
