A giant bow is the trendiest tree topper of the season—here’s how to make one

Upcycle old curtains or a long tablecloth into a statement bow for the top of your Christmas tree! It's also a great way to use textile scraps: you can join two wide fabric strips into one ribbon and hide the seam inside the knot.

Giant bow for the tree—Materials:

  • at least 5 meters (16‘5”) of sturdy fabric that’s 70 centimeters wide (28”), for example heavy cotton, velvet, or satin
  • fabric scissors
  • tape measure
  • sewing machine and thread
  • hand sewing needle
  • iron and ironing board
  • about 20 centimeters of sturdy, hand-bendable wire (8”)

Giant bow for the tree—instructions:

  1. Measure and cut a piece of fabric that’s 70 centimeters wide (28”) and long enough for your tree. The bow itself takes about 2 meters of the length (6‘7”), and the remaining length becomes the tails. From a 5-meter fabric (16‘5”), you’ll get tails about 1.5 meters long (5‘).
  2. Fold the piece in half lengthwise with right sides together. If you like, trim the top and bottom ends of the double layer on a slant. Sew the open edges together with a 0.5-centimeter seam allowance (1/4”), but leave a hand-sized opening along the long side for turning.
  3. Turn the piece right side out and press. Hand-stitch the opening closed, and press the oversized ribbon again if needed.
  4. Tie a large bow roughly at the center of the ribbon. Thread the piece of wire through the back of the bow’s knot, then fasten the bow to the tree by wrapping the wire around the upper part of the trunk.

Tip!

Stiffen the fabric with interfacing if needed.
