Ghosts on the loose

Boo! Make your own glowing ghost tea lights

Halloween enthusiasts can easily make these ghost tea lights at home! Drape the circles you rolled from clay onto a suitable mold to dry. These ghosts will last year after year.

Ghost tea lights—materials

  • Air-dry clay or crafting clay (e.g. DAS or Fimo clay)
  • Rolling pin
  • Round bowl
  • Empty toilet paper rolls and aluminum foil for molds
  • Plastic wrap
  • A straw

Ghost tea lights—instructions

  1. To make the mold, shape a ball of foil, place it on a toilet paper roll to form a head, and cover it with plastic wrap. You can also use another suitable mold; in the video, styrofoam cones were used. You’ll need one mold per ghost. Make sure to cover the molds with plastic wrap so the clay comes off easily once hardened.
  2. Roll the clay into a sheet about 3 mm thick (0.12 in). Using a round bowl about 16–24 cm (6–9.5 in) in diameter, cut out uniform circles. One 500 g (1.1 lb) package of clay is enough for several ghosts, depending on the size of your mold.
  3. Drape each circle on top of the mold to form a ghost shape. Use a straw or another suitable tool to remove the clay for the eyes and mouth. Neatly fold the ghost’s hem and smooth the clay’s edge with a water-moistened finger. Let it dry for a couple of days.
  4. Detach the dried figures from the mold and place LED tea lights or a small LED light string inside each ghost. If you like, you can also paint or decorate your ghost tea lights with felt-tip pens or even transfer tattoos.
