Garage turned into a red velvet and gold-saturated entertainment center! Mikko and Annastina’s home movie theater is a dream come true

Passionate Finland-based film buffs Mikko and Annastina transformed a two-car garage into an entertainment center exuding old-fashioned charm, complete with a big screen, wall-to-wall carpeting, and arcade machines.

Acompletely ordinary-looking, two-door garage building gives no hint of what’s inside. A side door leads visitors into a movie theater that exudes old-fashioned charm. It is the creation of passionate film enthusiasts Mikko Keskitalo and Annastina Hämäläinen—a dream come true.

“I’ve been dreaming about having my own movie theater for over ten years, where you’d enter along a corridor. There wasn’t one here, so we had to build a partition wall to create it,” Mikko explains.

Mikko and Annastina bought their single-family home, built in 2012, two years ago. The two-car garage on the property initially served as a storage space for miscellaneous items. Once they had mapped out the layout for the movie room, they searched Pinterest for inspiration. Final material choices were made as work progressed.

“First, we found the sofa and armchairs on the Tori marketplace. We chose the other colors to match them. We wanted a warm and homey vibe,” Annastina says.

Except for the electrical work, Mikko and Annastina did all the renovation themselves. It took about four months.

“It always feels like you’ve gone somewhere else entirely, even though you’re still at home,” Annastina says.

Annastina and Mikko spend a lot of time in their home movie theater. In addition to watching films, they play billiards, board or video games, and pinball, sing karaoke, listen to music, and throw parties for friends.

This is what the space looked like before the renovation:

Mikko and Annastina aren’t really into working on cars, so they decided to use the space for something that mattered to them. The garage door tracks were removed, the doors were bolted shut, and a drywall partition was built in front of them on the inside.
The renovation was already underway.
Paneling and lighting installation in progress.

“Horror movies aren’t nearly as scary in the house. In here, the atmosphere is completely different.”
To improve acoustics, wall-to-wall carpeting was installed, and pilasters were built along the walls. Ventilation was upgraded by adding a ventilation unit and heat pump.
The pilasters help prevent sound from bouncing off the walls. A frame of laminated veneer lumber was constructed first, then covered with panels. The edges were concealed with MDF strips and finished with trim. Under the wallpaper is drywall.
The uneven ceiling, curtains, and wall-to-wall carpeting also help improve the acoustics.
Red was the obvious choice for a movie theater. Mikko and Annastina feel it sets the perfect mood. The garage window is hidden behind the screen. A bench beneath the screen conceals the amplifier and game console.
You can make a grand entrance to this home theater along a corridor, just like in a real cinema! The posters were printed on canvas, and a license was required for them. They feature Mikko’s favorite childhood movies. Mikko and Annastina built the frames themselves from polystyrene molding.
