This friendship bracelet is made with two strands of yarn—see our instructions and choose your friend’s favorite colors!

You can make a friendship bracelet in many different ways. These adorable bracelets feature a herringbone pattern and small hearts. Lightweight, loosely twisted knitting or embroidery yarns are perfect for this project.

Friendship bracelet—supplies:

  • Cotton yarn in two different colors
  • A clothespin or a laundry clip
  • Sturdy cardboard

Friendship bracelet—instructions:

Friendship bracelet, step 1

1. Cut 8 pieces of yarn, each about 100 cm long, 4 in each color. Tie them in a knot so that around 10 cm of yarn ends remain. Attach the yarn bundle to the edge of a piece of sturdy cardboard with a clothespin or laundry clip. Sort the threads: 4 on each side, making sure the colors alternate in the same order on both sides.

2. Start weaving from the left side. Pass the first thread (red) over and then under the blue thread. Pull the red thread snug to the side.

Make each weaving knot as follows: pull downward on the thread being wrapped, and pull the wrapping thread to the side. This way, the color of the wrapped thread stays hidden, and the wrapping thread forms a visible knot on top.

Note!

Always make each knot twice in a row. After the first knot, make another one exactly the same way: the red thread wraps around the blue thread.

3. Continue weaving on the left side. Next, tie the red thread around the next thread (red). Remember to tie the knot twice in a row. Keep going until you reach the center. Then make the same knots on the right side. Finally, tie the two red threads in the middle together.

4. Start making knots again from the upper left side. Now the blue thread is next. Work the left side first, then the right side, and finally tie the two blue threads in the middle.

Continue the bracelet by repeating steps 2 and 3. First do the row with the red threads over the blue, then again with the blue threads over the red. Keep tying knots until the bracelet is the length you want (for example, 13–14 cm). The knots add about 3–3.5 cm to the total length.

5. Begin the heart pattern after step 3. Tie the second thread from the left (blue) over the outermost left-hand thread (red). Make the same knot on the right side.

6. Next, tie a red row. Leave the blue threads on the far edges, and tie the red knots downward on each side. Then tie the red threads together in the center.

7. Tie the second red threads at the edges now as the outermost ones over the blue threads. Make the same knots on both sides.

8. Weave the inner layer in blue: start with the second blue threads from the edges and work toward the center, tying them together in the middle.

9. Next is a “normal” red row, which finishes the lower part of the heart. Begin with the red threads on the edges and weave the entire row to the center.

10. Make a blue row in the same way. After that, start the next heart pattern from step 4.

11. Keep weaving until the bracelet is the length you want. Finally, tie all the yarns together in a single knot after the last woven row. Trim the ends to be the same length (leaving about 10 cm for tying), and tie the finished bracelet on your friend’s wrist.
