Coffee pot warmer

French press cozy: knit a beautiful winter colorwork pattern from leftover yarn

The colorwork motif on this French press cozy depicts snow falling in the winter night, brightening up the houses and gardens of a little coffee town. This sweet coffee pot cover is quick to knit and can fit in an envelope—it’s a perfect gift for your coffee-loving friend.

Size: Circumference about 31 cm and height 11 cm (fits Ikea’s Upphetta coffee maker).

French press cozy: supplies

  • Novita Viola yarn in the following shades: natural white (010), green (372), yellow (282), navy (170)

  • double-pointed needles size 2.5 mm (US 1.5) or according to your gauge

Gauge: 30 sts of colorwork = 10 cm.

Abbreviations

  • k: knit stitch, knit
  • p: purl stitch, purl
  • st, sts: stitch, stitches
  • rnd: round

Stitch patterns

Seed stitch:

  • 1st rnd: *k1, p1*, repeat *–* to the end of the rnd.
  • 2nd rnd: On the wrong side, purl the knit sts and knit the purl sts. Repeat rounds 1–2.

Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all rnds.

Colorwork: work in stockinette stitch according to the chart.

Note! Secure yarn floats longer than 5 sts by twisting the yarns around each other on the wrong side of your work. Place these twists in different spots so they don’t align with each other on consecutive rnds.

How to knit the French press cozy:

1. Cast on 92 sts with natural white and distribute them onto four needles, 23 sts each. First, work 4 rnds in seed stitch, then work 1 rnd in stockinette.

2. Next, begin the colorwork from Row 1 of the chart and repeat the 46-st pattern twice. Work chart rows 2–31. Note! On rows 29–31, work the white dots in colorwork.

3. Switch back to the natural white yarn and work 1 rnd of stockinette, then work 4 rnds in seed stitch. Bind off all sts.

The small white details on the houses, as well as the dots between them, are embroidered onto the finished cozy using duplicate stitch.

Finishing

Lightly steam the piece. Embroider the missing details in natural white using duplicate stitch. Steam the finished cover.
