A pin frog is a great help when arranging flowers—make your own from a tin can!
A pin frog, or kenzan, is a flower arranging tool that adds airiness to your compositions, allowing you to arrange flowers even in a shallow bowl. With a pin frog, even a few flowers can make an impressive display. You can easily make this spiky support yourself from inexpensive materials.
Pin frog—supplies:
- A small, clean tin can, such as one 6.5 cm in diameter
- Side cutters
- Needle-nose pliers
- Small nails, such as 25 × 1.4 mm brass-coated brad nails
- Painter’s tape
- Hammer
- Glue gun
- Scissors
Pin frog—instructions:

1. Using side cutters, cut off the top edge of the tin can. As shown in the picture, tidy up the inner edge with scissors. Leave about 3 cm of the rim.
2. Cover the bottom of the can with painter’s tape to make nailing easier.

3. Hammer nails into the bottom of the can to create holes at even intervals. Approximately 80 holes is a suitable number.
4. Remove the tape.

5. From the underside, insert a nail into each hole.

6. Cover the nail heads with glue.
7. Apply a second layer of glue, making sure each nail head is thoroughly covered.

8. Using scissors, cut slits in the rim of the can every few centimeters.

9. Bend 4–5 slits toward the base at a time and glue them in place, until the entire rim is folded.
