Sew a traditional flag garland for your Christmas tree—here’s how!
A flag garland is a traditional Christmas tree ornament that’s easy to make at home. Little fabric flags will bring joy to your garland year after year.
Give your tree an international flair with a colorful flag garland featuring flags from around the world. Whoever can name the most flags in the garland on Christmas Eve, might even win a prize!

- fabric scraps
- scissors
- sewing machine
- decorative ribbon
- double-sided fusible web
Flag garland for the tree—instructions:
- Cut a piece of fabric that matches the flag’s height but is twice its width. Make your flags generously sized at first, and then trim them to your preferred dimensions with pinking shears. Each finished flag measures about 6.5 x 4.5 cm (2.6 x 1.8 in), and about 13 x 4.5 cm (5.1 x 1.8 in) when laid flat.
- Next, fuse any shapes or designs in place with double-sided fusible webbing, then sew them on.
- Fold each flag in half and topstitch all around. Then secure the flags to the garland ribbon with a few stitches.
