Invite the elves in! Craft a super adorable elf door with our easy instructions

An elf door is a charming little Christmas decoration often tucked along a wall or baseboard to hint that a helpful holiday elf lives nearby. You can make one using simple supplies you already have around the house. Ready to create a doorway for a tiny visitor? Here’s how!

Elf door—materials:

  • cardboard
  • two paint colors
  • glue
  • utility knife
  • a ruler and a pencil.
The elf door is a Christmas’s hit. It’s impossible not to love, whether you’re a kid or an adult.

How to make an elf door

  1. Draw the elf door on cardboard or cardstock. Measurements: height 16.5 cm and width 11.5 cm (about 6.5 in x 4.5 in).
  2. Separate the door frame with a line drawn 1.5 cm (about 0.6 in) from each edge. Draw the corners as miter corners, from the frame’s outer edges to its inner edges.
  3. Draw two panel squares in the center of the door, each about 6.5 cm × 5 cm (about 2.5 in × 2 in).
  4. Cut out the pieces with a utility knife, then trim them a little more off the panels (a few millimeters or about 0.04 in). Protect your work surface with something like a thick magazine.
  5. Paint the door frame in one color and the door plus the panel squares in another.
  6. Glue the pieces onto cardboard, and then use a utility knife to cut the backing to the elf door’s size.
  7. Make a cardboard ladder that’s the right length for the elf door. It should reach from the floor to the top of the baseboard.
  8. Attach the elf door to the wall and welcome the elves!

Tip!

Make the elf door even more fun by crafting a mailbox, a tiny doormat, and a lantern. Check out the instructions for elf door accessories!

You can adjust the elf door’s dimensions however you like, or replace the door panels with slats. Leave a millimeter or two between the slats, and leave them half a centimeter (about 0.2 in) shorter than the door at the top and bottom.
You can paint the elf door and its frame in different colors, just like in real houses. It’s best to paint before gluing the pieces onto the cardstock. The panels have been cut a few millimeters smaller.
It’s easiest to glue all the pieces to a slightly larger piece of cardboard and only then cut the background to the elf door’s dimensions.
That’s an elf’s home! The best surprise for children is, of course, if the elf door simply “appears” in a room one day for them to find on their own.
