Got room for a retro mushroom lamp? Here’s how to make your own in minutes
Mushroom lamps reached peak popularity in the 1960s and 70s and have re-emerged as a social media décor hit. You need little more for this cozy lamp than a vase and a bowl.
Easy mushroom lamp—supplies:
- glass bowl
- glass vase
- painter’s tape
- a battery-powered light source, such as a light strip
- granite-effect spray paint
- glue made for glass surfaces
Easy mushroom lamp from dishes—instructions:
1. Begin by thoroughly cleaning the dishes to remove any grease, dirt, or leftover stickers.

2. Use painter’s tape to cover the outside surface of the dishes so the paint doesn’t spread.

3. Spray paint the inside in a well-ventilated space. A single coat is enough as it will still let light pass through. Leave the paint to dry thoroughly.

4. Wait until the surfaces are fully dry before removing the tape.

5. Glue the vase and the bowl so that the vase’s wider opening is facing down against the table.

6. Prepare the light source you plan to use. For this project, we used a battery-powered, remote-controlled LED puck light that offers multiple color settings.

7. Slip the light source into the bottom of the vase, letting the glow shine through both dishes. If you’re using a light strip, coil it inside the vase and secure it with tape.
