Easy men’s beanie: no purling required, perfect for beginners

A hat for someone who’s never knitted before? Yes, indeed! Knitting designer Meiju Kallio created a beanie pattern for her boyfriend, who picked up knitting needles for the very first time. In this easy hat pattern, you’ll use only knit stitches—no purling required. The result is a ruggedly stylish hat that even a beginner can master.

Size: For a man. The finished hat circumference is about 53 cm (21 in) and stretches to fit a head measuring about 58–59 cm (23 in).

Easy men’s beanie: supplies

  • Madelinetosh Tosh Vintage yarn (100% merino wool, about 100 g = 185 m or 3.5 oz = 202 yd) or any soft worsted-weight yarn
  • circular needles 5 mm (US 8), 40 cm (16 in) or longer for magic loop technique
  • a yarn needle and scissors

Gauge: about 17 sts = 10 cm (4 in).

Abbreviations:

  • k2tog: knit two stitches together
  • sts: stitches
This hat is knitted entirely without purl stitches. The edge is folded to the wrong side of the hat and knit together with the stitches on the needle.

Smooth-knit beanie: instructions

  1. Cast on 92 sts (the usual crosswise method). Join to work in the round, making sure the stitches aren’t twisted. Place a marker to pinpoint the beginning of the round.
  2. Knit 1 round. Continue in stockinette stitch in the round for 14 cm (5.5 in).
  3. Fold the cast-on edge to the wrong side of the work.
  4. Join the cast-on edge with the stitches on the next round, one stitch at a time, as follows: Insert your needle into the next stitch, but don’t knit it yet. Also insert your needle into the corresponding stitch on the cast-on edge, yarn over, and pull the yarn through both stitches (thus knitting them together). Make sure the stitch on the needle and the cast-on edge stitch are in the same vertical column so the edge stays neat and each stitch on the needle gets its partner from the lower edge.
  5. When all the edge stitches have been joined, continue knitting in the round for about 11 cm (4.3 in) or until the crown is covered.

Decreases

  • 1st decrease round: *Knit 2, k2tog*, repeat *–* around. (23 sts decreased, 69 sts remain.) Knit 3 rounds.
  • 2nd decrease round: *Knit 1, k2tog*, repeat *–* around. (23 sts decreased, 46 sts remain.) Knit 4 rounds.
  • 3rd decrease round: *k2tog*, repeat *–* around. (23 sts decreased, 23 sts remain.)
  • 4th decrease round: Knit 1, *k2tog*, repeat *–* around. (11 sts decreased, 12 sts remain.)

Cut the yarn, leaving about 15 cm (6 in) for weaving in ends. Pull the yarn through the remaining stitches and tighten. Weave in ends. Soak or lightly steam the hat so the knitting evens out.
