Wooden climbing support: Make a striking trellis for your plant
Made from round wooden rods, this climbing support is easy to build to any desired length. It supports your plant’s growth while keeping it slightly away from the wall, which will stay neat and dry. When painted the same color as the building’s exterior, the support remains subtle and won't overshadow the plant.
Wooden climbing support: materials
- Round wooden rods (24 mm in diameter)
- 45 mm and 120 mm exterior-grade screws
- 3 mm and 5 mm wood drill bits
- Drill/driver
- Surface treatment product
- Brush
- Saw

This climbing support, built with 24 mm round wooden rods, is both sturdy and substantial in appearance. In the sample work, there are three vertical and three horizontal rods.
Wooden climbing support: instructions
- Cut the round wooden rods for the vertical and horizontal pieces to your preferred dimensions.
- Use a 3 mm drill bit to make holes in the horizontal pieces, then attach them to the vertical pieces with 45 mm screws. Leave the sections that will be fastened to the wall undrilled.
- Cut four five-centimeter pieces from the round rod to use as wall-mounting blocks.
- Drill a hole lengthwise through each block using a 5 mm bit. Then, using the same bit, drill holes in the corresponding mounting points on the climbing support.
- Attach the climbing support to the wall with long screws, driving them through both the trellis and the mounting blocks. Finally, apply your chosen surface treatment.
