Cast on a stunning cable-knit hat with decorative bobbles
This warm, woolly hat combines classic cables, small bobbles, and a fold-over ribbed brim. It offers just the right challenge for more experienced knitters.
Size: 56–58 cm. The finished circumference is about 48–52 cm, and the hat’s height with the brim folded is about 22–24 cm.
Keisarinna hat: supplies
- One skein of Vuonue Wilhelmi yarn (70% wool, 30% Tencel, 100 g = 400 m) in light gray and two balls of Sandnes Garn Tynn Silk Mohair yarn (57% kid mohair, 28% silk, 15% wool, 25 g = 212 m) in color 1199 Salt’n Pepper Tweed. You’ll need about 300 m of each (or a comparable fingering and lace weight yarn).
- 3 mm (US 2.5) circular needle (40 cm) for ribbing, 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle (40 cm) for the cable pattern, and 3.5 mm (US 4) double-pointed needles or a circular needle suitable for the magic loop technique for shaping the top of the hat
- Stitch markers, a cable needle, and a tapestry needle
Gauge: 24 sts (one chart repeat) = 9.5 cm on 3.5 mm (US 4) needles. About 25 sts and 28 rounds = 10 cm in the cable pattern on 3.5 mm (US 4) needles. 11 sts and 16 rounds = 5 cm of stockinette in the round on the larger needles (after blocking).
Abbreviations:
- bobble (i-cord bobble): knit the stitch by alternating front and back loops, repeat once more. You now have 4 sts on the needle. *Slip the sts back to the left needle, and knit them from right to left.* Repeat *–* three more times. Slip the sts back to the left needle, then knit 2 sts together, and knit 2 sts together again. Pass the previously knitted st over the st you knitted last. You now have 1 st left on the needle. With the yarn in front, slip the st to the left needle. Wrap the yarn around the bobble from below and bring the yarn to the back, then knit the st one more time.

How to knit the Keisarinna hat:
This hat is knitted with two strands of yarn held together. Take one strand of each of your yarns and cast on 120 sts loosely with the smaller needles (3 mm (US 2.5)), PM, and join in the round. Work [k1 p1] rib until the piece measures about 15 cm from the cast-on edge or until you reach your desired length.

Switch to larger needles (3.5 mm (US 4)). Begin the cable pattern using the chart. The 24-st repeat is worked 5 times per round. Work rows 1–51 of the chart. When you finish the last row, 10 sts remain. Break the yarn and pull it through the remaining sts, and tighten securely.
Finishing
If you like, you can add a pom-pom to the hat. Weave in all ends on the wrong side. Wet-block the hat or gently steam it into shape. Fold the ribbed brim in half.
