A complete bedroom makeover

A designer’s surprise: this bedroom got a color refresh and a functional upgrade

A middle-aged couple found decorating their bedroom challenging because each wall has a door. They called in interior designer Minna Haapakoski, who solved their bedroom’s decorating dilemmas.

How do you create a calm, harmonious bedroom when each wall has a door? And to complicate matters further, they also wanted both a reading corner and space for quick workouts alongside the bed.

Interior designer Minna Haapakoski tackled the couple’s dilemma by moving the bed to the most uninterrupted wall, leading into the dressing area. She then covered that wall with birch paneling, creating a tranquil backdrop that also doubles as a headboard.

They wanted another surprise in the bedroom, too. Minna fulfilled that request in two ways: she removed the legs from the head end of the bed and designed a drawer unit underneath for it to rest on, and she proposed painting the bedroom’s walls and ceiling in graphite gray.

“People often overlook the ceiling. I like to do something there every now and then. A dark tone makes the space feel calm, and the light birch paneling freshens up the whole look,” the designer says.

Birch paneling was installed on the bedroom wall.
The wall behind the bed is covered with Koivui birch paneling. The light wood brings freshness to the space and frames the bed beautifully. Thanks to tongue-and-groove edges, the panels fit together easily. The lamps are by B. Living, and the linen bedding and throw are from Lapuan Kankurit.
A custom-made drawer unit was built for the bedroom.
The legs at the head end of the box spring bed have been removed, and the bed rests on a drawer unit made by Priimakaluste. The oak drawer unit has been stained black.

She created a reading nook under the window. Oak knobs were mounted on the wall to hold yoga mats, and kettlebells and weights fit neatly below instead of taking up floor space.

Decorating the bedroom was challenging because each wall has a door. Still, interior designer Minna Haapakoski managed to carve out room for sleeping, yoga, and a reading corner.
There’s a spot on the bedroom wall for the yoga mats.
Custom oak pegs for the yoga mats were made according to Minna Haapakoski’s drawings by Priimakaluste. “The end result is almost like a piece of art, with the mats displayed so beautifully,” the designer says.
A dark gray bedroom provides a calm space for reading.
There’s a perfect corner for a reading chair under the small window. The family already owned the dark Lundia piece of furniture. The wall lamp is the Flos 265, originally designed in 1973.
