A Daisy a Day

Daisies delight all summer—discover growing tips and the most beautiful varieties

Brighten your garden with daisies—popular, easy-care perennials that bloom all summer, attracting butterflies and bees. Find out how to grow and care for daisies, and discover the most stunning varieties.

Growing and caring for daisies

Sowing and dividing daisies

Wild daisies spread readily on their own in the garden. Shasta daisies can be propagated by division or from seeds. Painted daisies are best propagated from seeds, as they dislike being moved. Replant shasta daisies every three years to keep them vigorous.

Ideal growing location for daisies

All daisies thrive in sunny spots. Plant them in humus-rich, well-drained soil that can be dry or fresh.

Daisies don’t tolerate excessive moisture, so ensure that water doesn’t stand in their growing area. If needed, mix coarse sand into the soil to improve drainage. Painted and shasta daisies are especially susceptible to winter wetness.

Watering daisies

Water painted and shasta daisies during dry periods as needed. The common daisy generally doesn’t require extra watering.

Fertilizing daisies

Regularly fertilize painted and shasta daisies for best results. The common daisy doesn’t need fertilization.

Supporting daisies

Painted and shasta daisies may require support; consider using perennial plant supports.

Tip!

Remove spent flower stems to prolong the blooming period. Shasta daisies will rebloom after pruning.
