A clever trick

Give your vase a fresh look: crochet a detachable cover and slip the vase out of sight!

This crocheted vase is open at the bottom, and it can be slid over a regular glass jar. It’s easy to remove for washing and changing the water.

Size: This pattern is sized for a glass jar with a circumference of 29.5 cm and a height of 14 cm. A smaller jar also works. If you’d like it bigger, just add more stitches.

Crocheted vase—materials:

  • T-shirt yarn
  • 7 mm crochet hook
  • scissors
  • large-eyed darning needle
  • glass jar (see measurements above)

Abbreviations:

  • rnd: round
  • st: stitch
  • ch: chain stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch

Crocheted vase—instructions:

Crocheting the handles

Chain 14. Leave a long starting tail, as you’ll use it later to attach the handle.

Work 1 sl st in the second ch from the hook. Then work 1 sl st into each remaining ch, including the starting knot. Then ch 2. Turn the strip over and work 1 sl st in each loop on the reverse side (see photo). Fasten off. Also leave a long finishing tail, as you’ll use it later to attach the handle (see photo).

Make the second handle in the same way.

Crocheting the vase

Ch 30. Join the chain into a ring with a sl st in the first ch. Make sure it isn’t twisted (see photo).

Rnd 1: Ch 1. Then crochet 29 sc into the ring. Close the rnd with a sl st in the ch you made at the start of the rnd.

Rnd 2: Ch 3 (this counts as your first dc). Then crochet 4 dc and work 2 dc into the next st. Continue this way to the end of the rnd, so after every 5 dc, you work 2 dc in the same st. Close the rnd with a sl st in the 3rd ch of the first “dc.” You should now have 35 dc.

Rnd 3: Ch 3. Keep crocheting dc so that after every 6 dc, you work 2 dc in the same stitch (remember the initial ch 3 counts as a dc) (see photo). Close the rnd with a sl st in the 3rd ch of the first dc. You should have 40 dc by the end of this round.

Rnds 4–6: Start each rnd with ch 3, then work dc all around without increases. Close each rnd with a sl st, as before.

Rnd 7: Ch 3, then crochet 2 dc. Skip 1 st, then make the next dc in the following st. Continue this way to the end of the rnd, so after every 3 dc, you skip 1 st. Close the rnd with a sl st, as before. By the end of the round, you should have 30 dc.

Rnd 8: Ch 3, then crochet 3 dc. Skip 1 st, then make the next dc in the following st. Continue this way to the end of the rnd, so after every 4 dc, you skip 1 st. Close with a sl st. You’ll end up with 24 dc.

If you’d like, you can attach the handles now. You can also wait until the vase is finished, but attaching them to the taller neck takes a bit more dexterity.

Rnd 9: Mark the first st of the rnd with a stitch marker or a tail of yarn to keep track of where the round starts (the next sl st rnds are worked in a spiral). Work 1 sl st in each st.

Rnd 10: Work 1 sl st in the stitch behind each st from the previous rnd (see photo).

Rnd 11: Work 1 sl st through the top of each st from the previous rnd.

Rnd 12: At the start of the rnd, ch 3. Then crochet dc in the loop behind each st from the previous rnd (see photo). Work 2 dc in the same st for every 6th dc. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Attaching the handles

Attach the handles to the vase with a darning needle and the yarn tails at the height you prefer.

Finishing

Weave in all the yarn ends. Slide the vase into place through the opening at the bottom of the crocheted cover.
