Size: 61 × 95 cm.

Crocheted foldable cushion—materials:

  • Lankava Mini tube yarn (80% recycled cotton, 20% polyester, 1 kg = approx. 355 m): 1.5 kg of Burnt orange (8) and 1.5 kg of Baby pink (29)
  • crochet hook size 5 mm (US H-8) or as needed for your gauge
  • two 50 × 60 cm cushion inserts
  • 55 cm leather strap, width 8 mm

Gauge: 12 sts and 11 rows = 10 cm.

Gauge swatch:

Tapestry crochet: Crochet two pieces flat in single crochet, following the chart. Read odd (right-side) rows from right to left and even rows from left to right. Carry the unused yarn inside the stitches. Change colors by doing the last yarn over of the previous stitch with the new color. Gently pull the carried yarn so no loops remain at the color change. Keep the tension even. At the end of each row, leave the carried yarn one stitch away from the edge on the wrong side. When the yarn is about to run out, join a new end and crochet about 10 cm of it into the stitches. Continue with the new yarn, crocheting about 10 cm of the old yarn into the stitches.

Crocheted foldable cushion—pattern:

With pink yarn, ch 76.

Row 1: Work 1 sc into the 2nd ch from the hook (not counting the loop on the hook). Bring in the orange yarn, and work 7 sc in pink while carrying the orange yarn inside the stitches. On the last sc, switch to orange by making the final yarn over in orange, then work 14 sc in orange while carrying the pink inside. Continue following the chart: 14 sc in pink, 14 sc in orange, 14 sc in pink, 11 sc in orange = 75 stitches total. Leave the carried yarn one stitch away from the edge on the wrong side on every row. At the end of the row, ch 1 and turn. Note. The ch 1 for turning is always counted as the first stitch of each row.

Row 2: Work 12 sc in orange. Continue following the chart: 14 sc in pink, 14 sc in orange, 14 sc in pink, 14 sc in orange, 6 sc in pink. Chain 1 and turn.

Rows 3–30: Continue following the chart. At the end of each row, chain 1 and turn.

Repeat rows 1–30 two more times. Place a marker between rows 52 and 53 so you know where to join the cushions. Then work rows 1–15 again, for a total of 105 rows. Fasten off and weave in the ends. Crochet and mark the second piece the same way, but do not fasten off.

Finishing

Place the pieces wrong sides together so that the colors match along the long edges and the patterns match on the short edges. Join them together with single crochets. Begin at the corner using the leftover yarn and the color that matches the long edge.

Work 3 sc in the corner and then 1 sc for each row along the long side. Work 3 sc in the next corner, then work the short side alternating orange and pink according to the pattern. In the next corner, work 3 sc and continue along the remaining long side in the color indicated by the pattern. Leave the other short side open and insert the first cushion insert into this closed end of the work. Sew the pieces together between rows 52 and 53 for the fold, using back-and-forth running stitches: bring the needle to the wrong side between the 1st and 2nd stitches, *bring it up under the next stitch and over the following stitch back to the wrong side*, repeat from * to * until the end of the row. Then stitch back in the opposite way.

Insert the second cushion insert and single crochet the edges together matching the colors of the pattern. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Sewing the handle onto the crocheted foldable cushion

Handle

Thread the ends of the leather strap through the fold, 24 cm from the edges. Mark three holes on one end of the strap: the first 8 mm from the end, and the next two 18 mm apart. Punch holes at those marks. Overlap the strap ends by 5 cm and mark three holes on the other end through the existing ones. Sew the ends together through those holes with, for example, cotton twine.
