Turn scraps into baubles! Crochet a Christmas bauble around an old ornament in no time
If you have scuffed tree ornaments lying around, crochet colorful new outfits for them—and finally put those mismatched yarn scraps to good use as well.
Crocheted Christmas bauble—supplies:
- fine-weight wool or wool-blend yarn in assorted colors
- 2.5 mm crochet hook
- scissors
- thick sewing needle
- Christmas tree baubles
Crocheted Christmas bauble—pattern:
Sample pieces are crocheted over Christmas baubles measuring 5 cm (≈2") in diameter. Color is changed after every round. For tidy color changes, work the final yarn over of the last stitch of the previous round in the new color. If you want to make each bauble unique, shuffle the order of the colors.
Begin the first half of the bauble with a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as the first dc of the round).

Round 1: Work 11 more dc into the ring and join with a sl st. Tighten the ring.

Round 2: ch 3 (= first dc). Work 2 dc in each stitch around—24 dc total. Join with a sl st.

Round 3: ch 4 (= first dc and ch-1 space). Work 2 dc + ch 1 in each space between dc pairs of the previous round. Continue around. Finally, work 1 dc to form a pair with the ch-3 that began the round. Join with a sl st.

Round 4: Sc between the two dc of the first dc pair of Round 2, working the stitch loose enough so it won’t cinch the round in between. Sc into both dc of the first dc pair of the previous round. Repeat around and join with a sl st.

Round 5: Sc in each stitch around. Join with a sl st.
Round 6: With a different color, sc in each stitch around. Join with a sl st.
Finishing
Secure each round by making a knot with the starting and ending tail. Make the second half of the bauble in the same way as the first one.
Place the two pieces around your ornament and sew them together through the outermost loops of their edge stitches. Weave in the yarn discreetly at the base of the hanging loop.
