Checkerboard cowl—instructions:

Cowl structure

The cowl is worked in the round with a colorwork technique: crochet over the unused yarn at the base of your dc to avoid floats on the wrong side. When you switch colors, finish the last dc to the point where 2 loops remain on the hook, then pull through with the new color.

Start here

With C1, ch 144 and join into a ring with a slst, making sure the chain does not twist.

  • 1st rnd: Ch 2 with C1 and begin colorwork: Make 3 dc. Continue: *4 dc with C2, 4 dc with C1*, repeat from * to * until the end of the round. For the last set, 4 dc with C2. Join the last dc to the ch space at the start of the rnd with a slst.
  • 2nd rnd: Ch 2 with C1 (same color as previous rnd). Make 3 dc. Continue: *4 dc with C2, 4 dc with C1*, repeat from * to * around. For the last set, 4 dc with C2. Join the last dc to the ch space at the start of the rnd with a slst.
  • 3rd rnd: Ch 2 with C2 (different color than previous rnd). Make 3 dc. Continue: *4 dc with C1, 4 dc with C2*, repeat from * to * around. For the last set, 4 dc with C1. Join the last dc to the ch space at the start of the rnd with a slst.
  • 4th rnd: Ch 2 with C2 (same color as previous rnd). Make 3 dc. Continue: *4 dc with C1, 4 dc with C2*, repeat from * to * around. For the last set, 4 dc with C1. Join the last dc to the ch space at the start of the rnd with a slst.

Repeat rnds 1–4 six times total. Then work 1 rnd of sc with C1.

Weave in ends on the wrong side. Steam block the piece with care.

Tip!

  • If you have extra yarn, make your cowl taller. Or use leftover yarn and crochet checkers in multiple colors.
