Granny square beret—pattern:

Start by crocheting the granny squares (make 6):
- Ch 6, join with a sl st to the first ch to form a ring.
- Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc). Start each rnd similarly. Work *2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc*; repeat from * to * 2 more times, ch 3; join with a sl st to the top of beginning ch-3. You now have 4 dc groups and 4 corners.
- Rnd 2: Change color. *In the next corner space work 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1*; repeat from * to * 3 more times. Join with a sl st as in rnd 1. You now have 8 dc clusters.
- Rnd 3: Change color again. Work 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1 (you’re now at the corner), 3 dc, ch 1. Repeat this around. Join with a sl st as before. Work two more rnds in the same way, then fasten off and weave in ends.
- Make a total of 6 granny squares. You can mix and match colors to suit your style, or make all squares identical.

Crochet the central hexagon
- Ch 7, join with a sl st in the first ch to form a ring.
- Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc; begin every rnd with ch 3). Work *2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc*, repeat until you have 6 dc groups.
- Rnd 2: Change color. Work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner space; join with a sl st as in Rnd 1. You now have 12 dc clusters.
- Work the next three rnds in the same manner.Note! The chart shows only two additional rnds; crochet one extra rnd beyond the chart.
Finishing

1. Join the squares with chains as shown in the photo.

2. Crochet the brim:
- Rnd 1: Work 1 dc in each space.
- Rnd 2: Continue as in rnd 1, but skip every 4th space.
- Rnd 3: Decrease 6 more dc evenly around.
3. After joining all the pieces, weave in the ends and gently steam-block the beret under a pressing cloth.
4. Crochet a tiny pom-pom for the beret by holding the yarn double and ch 6.
