Crocheted bellflowers: materials

  • White crochet yarn, colorful crochet yarn
  • A crochet hook that matches your yarn
  • An LED string of lights
  • Sugar, water, a saucepan, a tray, and suitable drying molds to stiffen the flowers

How to crochet bellflowers

  1. With colored yarn, make 6–8 chain stitches (ch). Join them into a ring. Fit the ring around the light to check the size. Adjust the number of chain stitches as needed.
  2. In the chain ring, make 1 single crochet (sc), *5 ch and 1 sc.* Repeat *—* 4 more times.
  3. Switch to white yarn and work 1 sc into each chain loop. Repeat from *—* across the round.
  4. Slip stitch into the center of the first chain loop and continue as before, but make 10 ch in each loop. Work 3 rounds like this.
  5. With the starting color, crochet 7 double crochets (dc) into each loop, then fasten off.
You can slip the flowers directly onto the LED lights, but they’ll be sturdier if stiffened with a sugar-water solution.

Stiffening the flowers

  1. Make a sugar solution: in a saucepan, dissolve 150 ml (about 2/3 cup) sugar in an equal amount of water. Alternatively, you can buy stiffening agent at a craft store.
  2. Submerge the flowers in the solution and let them soak thoroughly.
  3. Place suitably shaped caps or small glasses on a tray to use as drying molds. Squeeze out excess solution and arrange the flowers on the tray. They may need several days to fully dry. You can speed up the process with a hair dryer.
  4. Place the flowers onto your string of lights. If the crocheted opening has tightened and doesn’t fit easily, trim it a millimeter or two wider. The stiffened crochet won’t unravel. A drop of glue can secure the flower, if needed.
