Round and round

Crocheted round rug—a T-shirt-yarn mat that brings cozy character to any space

A crocheted round rug is a cheerful way to update the floors of your home or cottage. This rug can even brave a covered terrace as it is machine-washable. The brightly-colored sample uses four colors, but feel free to mix and match shades to suit your own style.

Size: Diameter approx. 100 cm (39″).

Crochet rug with T-shirt yarn—materials:

  • Novita Strömsö T-shirt yarn: 600 g natural white (010), 300 g rosewater (504), 300 g pewter (450) and 150 g spelt (623)
  • Crochet hook size 8 mm (US L-11).

Gauge swatch:

  • Work chains (ch), single crochets (sc) and double crochets (dc) as indicated in the pattern. Note. When changing colors, yarn over and pull through the last loop of the previous stitch with the new color. Whenever possible, crochet over the yarn tails, so you'll have fewer ends to weave in later.

Gauge: 10 dc = 10 cm (4″).

The stitch count grows with every round, so progress will feel slower toward the end. Happily, there are only 37 rounds, and the pattern is easy to follow by comparing your work with the photo.

Wrap the rosewater yarn once around your finger and work into the ring you’ve created:

Rnd 1: ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch-1 sp), *1 dc, ch 1*; repeat from * to * 6 more times. Bring in natural white yarn and sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-4 = 16 sts.

Rnd 2: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in same st as ch-3, 2 dc in each st around. Join pewter yarn, sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3 = 32 dc.

Rnd 3: ch 1, sc in each dc around. Join with sl st to first sc = 32 sc.

Rnd 4: ch 1, sc in same st, ch 2, *skip next st, sc in next st, ch 2*; repeat from * to * 14 more times. Join natural white yarn and sl st to first sc. You now have 16 ch-spaces.

Rnd 5: Work 1 sc to reach the next ch-sp. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in same space. Work 3 dc in each remaining ch-sp around. Join spelt-colored yarn, sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3 = 48 dc (16 dc groups).

Rnd 6: ch 1, *1 sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st*; repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st to first sc = 64 sc.
