Crocheted dishcloth—a fun, eco-friendly alternative to your regular dishrag

A crocheted dishcloth is quick and easy to make. Crochet a pretty cloth for yourself or give it as a gift to a friend. This washable, reusable cloth is an eco-friendly alternative to a regular cloth. Bamboo yarn is an excellent choice, as bamboo is naturally antibacterial and highly absorbent.

Size: 23 cm × 23 cm (9" × 9").

Crochet dishcloth—supplies:

  • Alice Bamboo Fine yarn (100% bamboo, 100 g = about 440 m): 30 g gray (52) and 30 g black (60)
  • crochet hook size 3.5 mm (US E-4) or to match gauge.
  • Gauge: 24 sts and 26 rows = 10 cm (4").
When you crochet with black and gray yarn together, the cloth gets a heathered look.

Crocheted dishcloth—pattern

Using two strands of yarn held together, ch 54.

Row 1: 1 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook (the loop on the hook does not count), *ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 sc*, repeat from * to * to the end of the row.

Row 2: ch 1, 1 sc, 1 sc in the ch space, *ch 1, 1 sc in the ch space*, repeat from * to * across and end with 1 sc in the last st.

Row 3: ch 1, 1 sc, *ch 1, 1 sc in the ch space*, repeat from * to * across. Work the last sc one row lower, i.e. into the same st as the sc from the previous row, pulling the loop slightly longer. This helps keep the dishcloth edges neat and straight.

Row 4: ch 1, 1 sc, 1 sc in the ch space, *ch 1, 1 sc in the ch space*, repeat from * to * across, then make 1 sc in the sc of the previous row. Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until the dishcloth's height matches its width. Fasten off.

Here’s a tip!

Bamboo is an excellent choice for a dishcloth because it is a strong, absorbent fiber. It is also naturally antibacterial, which helps prevent germs and musty odors even when the cloth is wet.
