Dishcloth size: 20 x 20 cm (about 8 x 8 in).

Dishcloth from hemp yarn—materials:

  • one skein of gray (11) and one skein of light red (05) Fibra Natura Java yarn (each skein = 50 g, 100% hemp). With two skeins of Java hemp yarn, you can crochet two solid-colored cloths and one striped cloth.
  • a 4 mm (US G-6) crochet hook or the correct size to match your gauge.

Stitch pattern:

Work chain stitches, single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet according to the pattern instructions.

Gauge: 17 sts = 10 cm (about 4 in).

Color change:

Make the color change as follows: crochet with pink yarn until one stitch before the color-change point, and work the last single crochet until you have 2 loops on the hook. Yarn over with the gray yarn and pull it through both pink loops on the hook. The last single crochet in the previous color is now complete, and the new color is ready on the hook.

A dishcloth crocheted from hemp yarn only gets better with use, as the yarn becomes softer over time.Check out the instructions for crocheting an onion bag, too! [in Finnish]

Here’s how to crochet a dishcloth from hemp yarn

Chain 37 stitches for the foundation.

Row 1 (pink): In the third chain from the hook, make 1 half double crochet, then work 34 more half double crochets in the chain. Change colors when working the last stitch of the row, then turn.

Row 2 (gray): Chain 1 for turning and make 2 single crochets. *Make 1 double crochet around the post of the half double crochet from the previous row: yarn over, insert the hook from right to left around the post of the half double crochet, yarn over and pull up a loop while bringing the hook back, then finish the double crochet by yarning over and pulling through two loops twice. Crochet 1 single crochet in the next stitch*, repeat *—* a total of 16 times, then work 1 more single crochet. Turn.

Row 3 (gray): Chain 2 for turning and work 35 half double crochets, then turn. Note: Switch to pink yarn when working the last stitch of Row 3. Repeat Rows 2–3 a total of 12 more times, always changing color at the end of Row 3. Lastly, work one more row in gray as described in Row 2, turn, then work one final row in single crochet.

Finishing

To finish the last row, crochet a hanging loop: Chain 15 stitches and join them into a loop at the base of the chain with a slip stitch. Cut the yarn, pull it through the stitch, and weave in the ends.
