These slippers are knitted on a circular needle with thin tubular yarn. The slippers are worked from toe to heel by knitting domino squares that form a complete slipper. Make one pair for yourself and another as a gift!

Stitch patterns

Garter stitch: Knit flat entirely in knit stitch. Always slip the first stitch of each row knitwise (insert the needle into the stitch from the left).

Size of the domino square: Approx. 9 x 9 (10 x 10) cm. Compare your piece to these measurements to check the gauge.

How to knit the Cozy slippers:

These slippers are worked from toe to heel. Each slipper has five square-shaped and one triangular domino piece. Knit using two skeins at the same time as indicated in the pattern to minimize having to weave in ends.

1st domino square

Cast on 23(25) sts as follows: make a slip knot at the start of the left needle, *k 1 and place this st onto the left needle*, repeat *–* until you have 23(25) sts on your needle.

1st row (WS): k 22(24), p 1.

2nd row (RS): Mark the center st. Slip the first st knitwise (insert the needle into the st from the left), k until there is 1 st before the marker, decrease by knitting 3 sts together (= slip 2 sts knitwise, i.e., first insert the needle into the 2nd st and then into the 1st, k 1, pass the slipped sts over the knitted st), k the remaining sts, but p the last st.

3rd row: Slip the first st, k the remaining sts, but p the last st. Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rows until 3 sts remain and decrease them on the RS by knitting 3 sts together. One tip stitch remains now on the needle. Do not cut the yarn; instead, stretch the stitch and pull the yarn skein through it. Do not tighten the stitch because it will be opened later. Leave this skein of yarn aside and continue with the second skein.

2nd domino square

Turn the tip stitch of the 1st square downward (see photo 1). From the cast-on row, pick up 23(25) sts with a crochet hook and your needle. Start at the spot marked with a star and pick up sts through two loops at the edge. Use the hook for corner sts, then place the sts on the needle. Do as follows:

Insert the hook through the corner (photo 2), bring the yarn to the RS, and place the st on the needle. Then pick up 10(11) sts along the edge with the needle (insert the needle through the edge stitch, place the yarn on the needle, bring it out to the RS = 1 st). Now you have 11(12) sts on the needle. Pick up the next corner st with the hook (photo 3) and place it on the needle; then pick up 10(11) sts with the needle along the other side, and finally pick up 1 corner st with the hook = 23(25) sts. Knit the square the same as the 1st square and leave the tip stitch on the needle. The toe of the slipper is now complete. Continue with the same skein to knit the 3rd square.

3rd domino square

With the needle that has the tip stitch on it, pick up 10(11) sts from the left side of the square, pick up 1 st with the hook along the junction between squares, pick up 10(11) sts from the right side of the adjacent square (photo 4, star), and finally pick up 1 st with the hook under the tip stitch (photo 4, arrow) = 23(25) sts. Knit as you did the 1st square, cut the yarn, and pull it through the tip stitch. This square sits along the side of the foot.

4th domino square

Use the skein of yarn you set aside: open the tip stitch, pull the skein through, and place the stitch on the needle. Pick up another 22(24) sts. Knit as you did the 1st square and leave the tip stitch on hold on the needle. This square goes on the other side of the foot. Continue with the same skein for the 5th square.

5th domino square

With the needle that has the tip stitch on it, pick up 21(23) sts, open the other tip stitch, and place it on the needle = 23(25) sts. Knit as you did the 1st square, cut the yarn, and pull it through the tip stitch. This square sits under the heel (photo 5).

6th domino piece

This piece is triangular and sits behind the heel. Work it as follows: Turn the 5th square so that it faces you and the tip stitch faces up (photo 5). From the corner marked with a star, pick up 1 st with the hook, then pick up 10(11) sts with the needle, open the tip stitch and place it on the needle, pick up 10(11) sts again with the needle, and finally pick up 1 st with the hook = 23(25) sts. Work rows 1–3 as for the 1st square.

4th row (RS): Slip the first st, p2tog, k until there is 1 st before the marker, k3tog, k until 3 sts remain, p2tog, p1.

5th row: Slip the first st, k the rest, but p the last st.

Repeat the 4th and 5th rows until 5(7) sts remain and you have ended on a WS row. Then work the piece as follows: RS: Slip the first st, k 0(1), k3tog, k 0(1), p1. WS: Slip the first st, k 1(3) sts, p1. RS size 37/39: k3tog. Leave the tip stitch and yarn on hold. RS size 40/42: Slip the first st, k3tog, p1. WS: Slip the first st, k1, p1. RS: k3tog. Leave the tip stitch and yarn on hold.

Edging around the slipper opening

With the needle that has the tip stitch on it, pick up 18(20) sts along one side of the slipper, 1 st from the center front (mark this st), and another 18(20) sts from the other side = 38(42) sts. Your circular needle may be too long, so pull the cable out periodically or switch to double-pointed needles.

1st round: purl.

2nd round: k1, make an skp decrease (= slip 1 knitwise, knit 1 and pass the slipped st over), k4(5), k2tog, knit until there is 1 st before the marker, k3tog, knit until 8(9) sts remain, skp, k4(5), k2tog = 32(36) sts.

3rd–4th rounds: knit.

5th round: knit, but at the marker k3tog = 30(34) sts.

6th–7th rounds: knit.

8th round: purl.

Bind off all sts. Secure with a few stitches using sewing thread.
