Colorful tassel rug: turn old sheets into a versatile piece of decor
Turn old sheets, clothes, and fabric scraps into an easy and colorful tassel rug. You don’t need a sewing machine, as the strips are tied onto a mesh base. Use this fun rug as a floor mat, chair cushion, or a wall hanging.
Supplies for the colorful tassel rug:
- Non-slip mat
- Old sheets or other fabrics
- Scissors
- Crochet hook

Lightweight cotton or jersey fabrics, such as old sheets or T-shirts, are ideal for the rug’s tassels.
Instructions for the colorful tassel rug:
- Plan the colors and patterns for your rug. If needed, draw them onto the non-slip mat with a waterproof marker.
- Tear the old fabrics into strips approximately 2 cm wide, then cut them into pieces about 15 cm long. Sort the fabric pieces into separate piles by color.
- Begin knotting the rug tassels by folding a fabric strip in half. Using a crochet hook, pull the folded end through a hole in the non-slip mat. Next, pull the loose ends of the fabric strip through the loop created by the fold, securing it so that the cross-thread of the mesh is inside the knot. Continue attaching fabric strips to each cross-thread of the mat. If the fabric is thick, you can tie tassels on every other row, and the rug will still be dense enough.
- Finally, use scissors to trim the tassels of the rug.
