Where should I put my chrysanthemum?

Chrysanthemum’s growing location should be cool and airy, and the plant can be placed in a sunny or partially shaded spot. Indian chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum indicum) is a short-day plant—it blooms when the days become shorter than the nights. Therefore, avoid placing it near garden lights or other light sources, because even a brief period of illumination can disrupt the flowering. Large-flowered chrysanthemum varieties do not tolerate rain well, so it’s best to keep them under a canopy or in another sheltered place.

What kind of soil is the best for chrysanthemum?

A nutrient-rich, well-draining potting mix is ideal for chrysanthemum. Mixing compost into standard potting soil further improves its structure and nutrient content.

How should I care for my chrysanthemum?

Water your Indian chrysanthemum regularly, and do not allow the soil to dry out. Fertilize once a week with a water-soluble fertilizer, or add slow-release fertilizer pellets or sticks, to encourage abundant blooming throughout autumn. If your chrysanthemum dries out, submerge the entire pot in a bucket of water until no more air bubbles appear.

Can I overwinter my chrysanthemum?

Indian chrysanthemum is typically purchased as a seasonal flower, but you can try overwintering it in a place where the temperature is around 5°C. First, cut the shoots back to about five centimeters. Take the chrysanthemum back to room temperature in February or March and change the soil. Finally, plant it outdoors in summer.
