Soft matte magic: transform old Christmas ornaments into new favorites

Are your Christmas ornaments looking faded or simply out of style? Dip them in clay paint for a soft, matte finish. Another option is to create a textured paint by mixing acrylic paint with baking soda. And just like that, ornaments that had reached the end of their lifespan will become your new favorites!

Have you heard of faux ceramic? It’s a technique where old glassware is given a ceramics-like finish. This year, give that same stunning, matte glow to old Christmas ornaments! Don’t toss your old, faded baubles—turn them into something brand-new.

You just need one or a few shades of matte clay paint and a little patience to let them dry. It’s straightforward: dip the ornaments into the clay paint and hang them with enough space to dry. The lovely matte paint adheres well but needs overnight to set.

To customize your Christmas ornaments, we recommend using clay paints that create a beautiful matte finish. You can also get a similar effect by mixing acrylic paint with baking soda and brushing this mixture onto the ornaments. Add baking soda gradually, test the surface, and only add more if needed. The more baking soda you use, the grainier the ornaments will become.

The light-colored ornaments got their new look with clay paint, and the blue-gray ones were updated using leftover paint from the cupboard.
