
Meet Chinese money plant: the perfect easy-care houseplant for beginners
The Chinese money plant is a striking houseplant with lovely, round green leaves. It’s also easy to care for, making it a fantastic choice for beginners.
Originally from southern China, Chinese money plant (Pilea peperomioides) is probably the best-known member of the pilea genus. In Scandinavia, it’s been cultivated as a houseplant since the 1940s, after a Norwegian missionary brought it back to Norway. The plant remained fairly unknown in its early decades, spreading among plant enthusiasts mostly through cuttings. Recently, it has enjoyed a renewed popularity as both a houseplant and a decorative element.
Chinese money plant has lovely, round, dark green leaves that are somewhat thick. It can grow to around 30 centimeters (12 inches) tall.
Other pilea species include aluminum plant (P. cadierei), depressed clearweed (P. depressa) and artillery plant (P. microphylla).
How to care for Chinese money plant
You can use ordinary houseplant potting soil for Chinese money plant, ideally with a bit of sand mixed in. Be sure that any excess water can drain out of the pot, and avoid letting the plant stand in water on the saucer for too long.
Light conditions
Chinese money plant grows best in a bright spot, but you should shield its leaves from direct sunlight. A north- or east-facing window usually provides enough light.
Watering
Water Chinese money plant regularly, letting only the top layer of the soil dry slightly between waterings.
Like other houseplants, Chinese money plant also appreciates a light misting.
Fertilizing
During the growing season, from spring through August, fertilize Chinese money plant every two or three weeks.
Propagation
The best way to propagate Chinese money plant is by dividing a larger mother plant. You can also try leaf cuttings.
