Checklist for successful celebrations—check out our tips for organizing backyard parties

1. Timing is everything

If you’re hosting a backyard party during the vacation season, send out invitations well in advance—about a month or two—so people can plan accordingly and attend. You can hold all kinds of outdoor events, from casual summer gatherings with friends to confirmation parties and graduation celebrations. Summer weather can, of course, be unpredictable, so be ready for anything. Mention in the invitation that your party is outdoors so guests can dress appropriately.

2. Permits and notifying neighbors

You’re free to hold gatherings in your own yard, but it’s considerate to let your neighbors know, especially if you expect a large crowd. In Finland there is a law all the way from 1920, that requires you to be mindful of neighbors, and it's not considerate to subject them to unreasonable noise. To keep things friendly, neighbors should also be willing to compromise at times when it comes to occasional festivities.

3. Furniture, tables, tents, and dishes

Your expected guest count will determine whether your own outdoor furniture is sufficient or if you need additional pieces. If you’re not planning to buy new items, consider renting. Many companies offer patio tables and chairs at different price points, and you can find local rental services with a quick online search.

Since rain can catch you off guard, it’s wise to have some sort of tent or canopy on hand. A party tent, pavilion, or covering can be easily set up on a terrace, sand, lawn, or asphalt.

You can also rent tablecloths, dishes, and champagne glasses. If you have many guests, single-use tableware can be a convenient option outdoors. Just place a large trash bin nearby for easy disposal.

4. A welcome toast on the terrace

Summer is the perfect time to take advantage of your terrace. Guests can gather for lively conversations and get to know each other. For dining, you can move to a separate pavilion or tent, which also offers shelter in case of rain.

When the evening gets cooler, terrace heaters and blankets come in handy. If you don’t want to buy a terrace heater, you can rent one. Depending on the heater and how long you rent it (1–7 days), the cost ranges from about 100 to 400 euros. It’s also wise to have umbrellas and disposable rain ponchos ready for guests.

5. The lawn and plantings

Your lawn might experience some wear and tear during the festivities. If it’s newly planted, avoid walking on it and consider creating alternative pathways. A healthy, well-planted lawn typically handles a party just fine. Placing rugs under tables and along walkways helps keep high heels from sinking into the ground.

Flowers and greenery set a festive tone. Weed your flowerbeds and planting areas, and water and fertilize them in advance so they’ll thrive when guests arrive. You can easily add splashes of color with potted plants. Summer blooms—whether wild or store-bought—also make lovely table decorations.

6. Lighting sets the mood

Lighting plays a key role in creating the right atmosphere. Garden lights can be eco-friendly if they run on solar power. You’ll find plenty of themed lights for the garden to decorate a party tent, pavilion, or table. Candles and outdoor torches create a cozy vibe as evening falls, while a torch at the front gate warmly greets your guests!
