Chanterelle hooks: instructions

Air dry clay mushrooms
You will need air-dry clay, aluminum foil, adhesive hooks, and sculpting tools to create these hooks.

Shape a base for the mushroom from aluminum foil and attach it to the adhesive hook.

1. Shape the chanterelle stem from foil and glue it onto the plastic wall hook.

2. Form the chanterelle cap from foil and glue it to the stem.

3. Cover the entire piece with another continuous layer of foil. Your base structure is now ready.

Wrap the mushroom structure tightly with the rolled-out sheet of air-dry clay.

5. Cover the foil mushroom with a thin layer of modeling clay. Make sure there are no weak spots or gaps in the surface.

Coat the foil mushroom as tightly as possible.
Finish the mushroom surface so it’s compact and as smooth as possible. Avoid leaving any visible seams.

6. Smooth out the clay surface with water-dampened fingers. Pay special attention to any seams.

7. Use a sculpting tool to remove any clay that extends over the edges of the adhesive hook. Once done, the base of the hook should sit flush against the wall.

Use a brush to apply a thin layer of chanterelle-yellow paint. Let it dry, then add a second coat if needed.

10. Paint the mushroom hooks, let them dry, and finish them with a glossy varnish if you’d like.

Don’t make your mushrooms overly polished or smooth—real chanterelles are sometimes quite wrinkly.

These mushroom hooks are surprisingly sturdy if their aluminum core is well constructed.
