Cats love warmth! Knit super cute cat socks for lounging at home

Slip on your wool socks, bring your feet together, look down—you’ll see an adorable little kitty. These cat socks are easy to knit for your own delight or as a gift for a friend.

Size: children’s and women’s, size approx. EU 22(26)30(38).

Cat socks: supplies

  • Novita Nalle yarn (75% wool, 25% polyamide): 100 g of turquoise (329), plus a small amount of gray (043), white (011), black (099), and light pink for embroidering
  • Double-pointed needles size 3 mm (US 2.5) or according to your gauge.

Stitch patterns:

  • Rib stitch in the round: work *k2, p2*, repeat from * to *.
  • Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all rounds.

Gauge: 24 sts in stockinette stitch = 10 cm.

How to knit the Cat socks:

  1. Cast on 40(44)48(56) sts on double-pointed needles and divide them onto four needles, 10(11)12(14) sts on each. The start of the round is always between needles I and IV. Work 5(5)6(6) cm of rib stitch in the round. Then continue in stockinette stitch in the round for 14(14)15(16) cm.
  2. Begin the heel flap by working the sts on needle I onto needle IV in rib stitch (= 20-22-24-28 sts). Leave the other sts on hold. Turn your work and begin the reinforced stitch: Row 1 (WS): slip 1 purlwise (yarn in back), purl the other sts, turn work. Row 2 (RS): *slip 1 (yarn in back), k1*, repeat from * to * to end of row, turn work. Repeat Rows 1–2 a total of 10(11)12(14) times (= 20-22-24-26 rows).
  3. Work one more WS row and begin the heel turn decreases while continuing the same reinforced stitch. Work across the heel flap until 7(8)9(10) sts remain. Make an skp decrease (= slip 1 knitwise, k1 and pass slipped st over knit st) and turn work. Slip 1 purlwise, p 6(6)6(8), then purl the next 2 sts together, turn work. Slip 1, knit until 6(7)8(9) sts remain, then skp. Continue in this way, reducing the side sts and keeping the 8(8)8(10) center sts the same. When the side sts are used up, distribute the heel flap sts onto 2 needles: 4,4(4,4)4,4(5,5).
  4. Next, using a free needle, pick up 10(11)12(14) sts along the left edge of the heel flap plus 1 st between the needles, and knit these sts through the back loop onto needle I. Knit the sts on needles II and III in stockinette. Then pick up 10(11)12(14) sts plus 1 st between the needles along the right edge of the heel flap and knit these sts through the back loop onto needle IV.
  5. Continue with all 50(54)58(68) sts in stockinette and begin the gusset decreases: at the end of needle I, k2tog; at the beginning of needle IV, skp. Knit 1 plain round, then make the decreases as before, knit 2 plain rounds, decrease, then 3 plain rounds, etc. Continue until each needle has 10(11)12(14) sts; then stop decreasing.
  6. Continue in stockinette until the sole measures about 12(13)15(19) cm or until your little toe is covered, then begin the toe decreases: on needles I and III, knit until 2 sts remain, k2tog, then k1. At the beginning of needles II and IV, k1, then skp. Continue these decreases on every other round until 3(4)5(6) sts remain on each needle. Then decrease on every round. When 8 sts total remain, cut the yarn, pull it through the remaining sts, and secure. Work the second cat sock the same way.

Finishing the Cat socks

  1. Embroider the cat motif halves according to the chart using duplicate stitch. Start two rows below where the toe decreases begin, ensuring the spot marked with an arrow on the chart is at the center of the instep.
  2. Sew whiskers for the cat with black yarn.
