Succulents are plants that store water in some of their parts, such as leaves or stems. This adaptation is key to successful succulent care. While nearly all cacti are succulents, not all succulents are cacti.

Many succulents originate from dry regions, so in addition to storing water, they have developed other mechanisms for surviving. As a result, they are known among low-maintenance houseplants for beginners. Strategies that reduce evaporation, such as hairs, ridges, or a thick waxy layer, are common among succulents.

Succulents generally grow slowly, which means they remain moderately sized for a long time and take up little space, making them perfect for small containers.

Succulents are popular for their distinctive or attractive appearance, though some species are cultivated for their flowers. Certain species require daily or seasonally changing temperatures in order to flower. If those conditions are not met, they will not bloom.

Since succulents come from such diverse habitats, there are no one-size-fits-all care guidelines. The best soil for succulents and how often to water succulents can vary significantly by species. Get to know the needs of your specific plant so your succulents can really thrive.

Container

Most succulents do well in a small, unglazed clay pot. You can also group them together in a larger container.

Soil

For the best soil for succulents, use a cactus soil mix or soil with plenty of sand mixed in (one-third to half). Place a drainage layer of expanded clay pebbles or broken pottery at the bottom.

Location

A bright spot is ideal, and some species also thrive in direct sun.

Watering

Knowing how often to water succulents is essential to avoid common succulent watering mistakes. Water generously, then let the soil dry out. During winter, water sparingly, as overwatering can kill a succulent.

Fertilizing

As part of succulent care, use fertilizer very sparingly, ideally a low-nitrogen type.
