Craft a cozy cardboard gingerbread house—an easy DIY holiday hideaway for your pet
Your pet’s gingerbread house may look freshly baked, but it’s actually made from recycled cardboard. Decorate it with charming white details reminiscent of royal icing.
Cardboard gingerbread house for pet—materials
- two cardboard boxes (the right size for your cat or dog’s house)
- glue or hot glue
- scissors
- a utility knife
- a long ruler
- a pencil
- a paintbrush
- acrylic paint
- colorful cardboard (recycled boxes work well)
Cardboard gingerbread house—instructions
1. Cut triangular shapes on the short sides of the cardboard box. First, measure the midpoint of the edge, then draw lines to each corner with a ruler. Cut along those lines. If you’re a child or teen, ask an adult for help with the utility knife!

2. Glue the long sides onto the triangular ends of the short sides.

3. Cut the roof from another cardboard box so it extends about 2 cm (1 in) beyond the edges on each side. Then glue it in place.

4. Sketch the doors and windows, then cut the openings with a utility knife and scissors.

5. Cut white cardstock into decorative pieces around the windows and doors.
6. Glue these decorations in place.
7. Add more ornaments with acrylic paint, or use chalk paint if you prefer.
