Size: 160 cm (63'') in diameter.

Birka rug—materials:

  • Lankava Frotee loopy craft yarn (80% recycled cotton, 20% polyester, 1.2 kg = approx. 280 m): 2.6 kg black (70), 2.6 kg natural white (52), and 300 g blue (74)

  • 8 mm crochet hook (or size needed to obtain gauge)

Gauge: 7 dc and 4 rounds = 10 cm × 10 cm (4'' × 4'').

Work the rug in double crochet in your preferred color combination. The sample uses white and black, and the edge is made in blue. The chart shows 1/6 of the hexagonal rug.

Birka rug—pattern:

Work tapestry crochet as follows: Work dc in joined rounds with two colors, following the pattern and chart. Carry the second yarn inside the stitches throughout. When changing colors, complete the last yarn-over of the previous stitch with the new color.

Crochet as follows:

With white yarn, wrap the yarn around two fingers to form a magic ring.

Round 1: Into the ring, work 3 ch (counts as the first dc of the round), then 17 dc, crocheting the yarn end inside the stitches. Switch to black yarn by working the final yarn over of the last dc with black, then sl st in the 3rd ch. Pull the ring tight by pulling the yarn end. Continue following the chart, repeating each row 6 times and making increases as you go.

Round 2: With black yarn, ch 3, then switch to white yarn and work 1 dc in the same st as the ch, *dc in next 2 sts in white, switch to black yarn and work 1 dc in the same st as the white dc (= increase), ch 1, 1 dc in the next st, switch to white yarn and work 1 dc in the same st as the black dc*, repeat from * to * four more times, then dc in next 2 in white, switch to black yarn and work 1 dc in the same st as the white dc, ch 1, 1 sl st in the 3rd ch = 30 dc. Close all rounds the same way.

Round 3: With black yarn, ch 3, 1 dc in the same st as the ch, *dc in next 3 in white, 2 dc in the same st in black (= increase), ch 1, 2 dc in the same st*, repeat from * to * four more times, then dc in next 3 in white, 2 dc in black in the same st, ch 1, then 1 sl st in the 3rd ch = 42 dc.

Rounds 4–25: Follow the chart, and at the end of Round 25, switch to blue yarn. Fasten off the black and white yarns and continue to edge the rug.

Round 26: With blue yarn, ch 1, then work 1 sc in each dc, 1 sc in each ch-space, and close the round with 1 sl st in the first ch.

Round 27: Work 1 sl st in each st, fasten off, and finish the round by stitching invisibly (pull the yarn through the last sl st, then bring it to the wrong side between the 1st and 2nd sl st, then through the center of the last sl st to the wrong side again).
